Learning to be a good lover

Many people may assume that some are simply naturally gifted at intimacy, born with an instinct for sexual connection that others just don’t possess. It’s a romantic notion but quite an unhelpful one.

We believe that intimacy is something you learn, and more importantly, something you keep learning.

It’s not one skill but many. Genuine presence, honest communication, reading another person with curiosity rather than assuming what they want, knowing how to create safety and how to stay open. None of this is innate, and all of it develops with attention and practice.

Many of us are conditoned to believe that needing to learn any of this means something is wrong with us. It’s a tender place, and one we have a lot of compassion for.

In our experience, the people who are most genuinely connected in their intimate lives share one quality above everything else: they stayed curious. They kept asking, kept noticing, kept being open to discovering something new about themselves or the person they were with.

That openness is genuinely attractive, by the way. It is deeply reassuring being with someone who approaches intimacy as something to explore together.

The natural lover was always a fiction. What’s real is the lover who keeps showing up with honesty and curiosity.
